Editor’s Notes
Lathallan is an independent all-through co-educational school. It has class sizes, on average, of 12 pupils. A personal tutor system is set in place right from the pupil’s early years. There is a school bus service from Aberdeen in the North and as far as Finavon in the South. Day, flexi and full boarding make it an easy option for parents and pupils alike. Lathallan’s traditions and ethos are a fundamental part of the school’s success in a well established Scottish educational system. For more information visit www.lathallan.org.uk

Lathallan School was originally located next to Lathallan Farm just south of the hamlet of Largoward in Fife. However, following a fire in the early hours of 2nd September 1949 the school with 74 boys moved to Brotherton Castle which was then owned by Charles Alexander, a parent. The Castle was built in 1867 by Hercules James Scott. During the Second World War Brotherton Castle was used as a maternity hospital.
In 1950 Brotherton Castle and its grounds were sold to the school governors and in 1976 the school finally became co-educational. A nursery department followed and in 2004 the school opened an adjacent nursery Springboard, which offers nursery care and education all year round.
Lathallan’s biggest step forward was still to come, however, as in 2004 the school announced its intention to continue its own unique brand of education to senior school pupils, with the first senior school pupils joining the school in September 2006. The senior school is housed in the main castle building with temporary buildings introduced to the site in September 2007 to house some senior school classes while development of the estate continues as plans are underway to construct a new school sports pavilion and a senior school teaching block.
Canterbury are delighted to be supporting this year’s tournament by providing Referees kit and Match Balls and we will be joined by Ian Mc Lauchlan, President of Scottish Rugby Union and Sir Moir Lockhead, Chairman of Scottish Rugby Union along with several Scottish Rugby Internationals.
The event will raise funds for The Bill McLaren Foundation, Hearts and Balls and The Lathallan Foundation for bursaries.’’

Canterbury help local club in Guinness World Record Attempt
Aldwinians RUFC is celebrating its 75th Anniversary, and to help commemorate the occasion, the club are organising an all-day ‘Family Fun Day’ at their ground in Audenshaw, Manchester on bank holiday Monday, 7th May.
Known for organising some of the best local events, Aldwinnians are looking to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of rugby shirts from around the world displayed in one day and the shirts will be placed on their First XV team pitch by both members of the club and the wider local community. To achieve this the club will need around 15,000 – 20,000 shirts and having written to us to ask for our assistance with their challenge, we raided our cupboards in search of old unwanted rugby shirts and jerseys and managed to fill 6 large boxes that we have now donated to the club for their event. Once the day is over and hopefully the record broken, the shirts will be donated to LV=SOS Kit Aid who are a charity who supply underprivileged children throughout the UK and the world with sporting kit. This will be the largest donation they have ever received.
Can you help?
Do you have any unwanted rugby jerseys lying around the house, then why not contact the club and be part of this record attempt, you never know you may get your picture in the paper or even on TV!
Please contact the club secretary Sylvia Donley at
Come along and join in The event, which starts at 10.30am on the Bank Holiday Monday, promises to be a fantastic day out for everyone who comes along, with all sorts of activities going on, from children’s rides to adult assault courses and sumo wrestling, from ice cream vans to cake stalls, from tag rugby to the TA with their climbing wall, from brass bands to Morris men and to top it off a live local band to close the event. Hopefully Tameside Radio, KEY 103 and both ESPN and Sky Sports News will be there to cover the occasion so if you are lucky enough to have the day off then please come down and enjoy the day.
